What Does MLK Have to Do with You?
Today we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. Now, you may be wondering what that has to do with you or with the kinds of topics we cover in this blog. And I am here to say, “Everything.”
This is not a blog about racism or civil rights or politics. But it is a blog about speaking your truth, living your authentic life, being empowered, and bucking the status quo in order to live your best life by fulfilling your life’s purpose.
So you can see, “Everything.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did not hide his truth or his authentic voice. He was not afraid to buck the system because it was scary or would make other people uncomfortable. He did not allow others to disempower him. He knew his life’s purpose. He knew what his heart called him to do and he acted, even when it was scary or hard.
This is what we are all called to do. We are here on this planet to fulfill a purpose. We were created with our particular set of strengths, gifts, passions and talents so that we could use these in our own unique way to create a better world. For Martin Luther King Jr. it was a civil rights movement. For you, it may be starting a business, serving on the PTA or writing a novel. We all have a calling, no matter how big or small, that lives within us and is yearning to be fulfilled.
And when we ignore that yearning; When we hide and keep silent or when we play small so as not to rock the boat or offend others, a part of us dies. That feeling of malaise, that feeling of emptiness, that burning desire for something more, that nagging question; “Is this all there is?” That, my friends, is your soul crying out to be fulfilled. That is your purpose banging on the door, waiting for you to answer.
I know it is scary. I know you worry about turning your current life upside down. I know you think others will think you are crazy. I know you struggle with limiting beliefs, like “I can’t do that!.” may mean shocking others. I know because I have done it.
But I have a calling and every day that I touch someone’s life, that i empower them to own their truth, to live with passion and purpose, I am also fulfilled. Every time I watch a woman willing to face the truth of what is working in her life and what isn’t and overcome her fear and self-doubt to share her unique light in the world, I also light up. I know that the path to true joy is through your purpose.
Martin Luther King Jr. is a brilliant example of truth, passion and purpose. He is a brilliant example of overcoming tremendous obstacles to do what he was called to do. What he knew in his heart was right. What he knew was his calling, despite the status quo. What would our world be like if he had denied his calling and settled for the status quo? Do you know what you will be denying the world if you don’t answer your calling? If you just settle for what has always been?
it takes courage to live with passion and purpose. But you owe it to yourself and the world to do so. Consider all the people MLK never met, whom he is still impacting. You never know the trickle effect of following your heart.
This is why MLK is important to every single one of us.
I hope you have a dream and you follow it today.
Peace and Love to you all,
